At LifeX, we strive to create a comfortable and enjoyable living environment for all our members. However, shared living spaces can sometimes encounter challenges, such as the presence of pantry moths in the kitchen. These pests can quickly infest food and cabinets if not addressed promptly. This guide provides reassurance, advice, and practical steps to help you and your housemates tackle the issue together.

What Are Pantry Moths?

Pantry moths, also known as meal moths, are small insects that can infest dry food items such as grains, nuts, flour, cereals, and spices. They are attracted to open or improperly sealed food containers and can multiply rapidly, making it essential to address the problem as soon as it arises.

What to Do if You Spot Moths

  1. Alert the LifeX Support Team:

    • If you suspect or notice the presence of moths in your kitchen, take a photo of the affected area or the moth and send it to our support team. This will help us understand the extent of the issue and arrange necessary actions.

  2. Dispose of Infested Food:

    • Carefully check all food items in the pantry and dispose of anything that shows signs of infestation, such as small web-like structures, larvae, or moths. This step is crucial to prevent the spread of moths to other food items.

  3. Clean and Inspect Containers:

    • Empty and thoroughly clean reusable containers with hot soapy water to eliminate any eggs or larvae. Make sure to seal food in airtight containers to prevent future infestations.

  4. Organise a House Meeting:

    • Coordinate with your housemates to ensure everyone is aware of the issue and takes responsibility for their food. As a co-living space, teamwork is vital to keeping the apartment pest-free.
