Why Has My Rent Increased?

👋 This article applies to members living in Berlin, Munich and Hamburg.

📈 What Is Index Rent?

Your rental contract includes an index rent (Indexmiete). This means your rent can be adjusted in line with changes in Germany's Consumer Price Index (Verbraucherpreisindex), published by the Federal Statistical Office.

The adjustment reflects inflation over the relevant period and is based on the index rent terms in your contract.

✅ What Does This Mean for You?

  • Annual adjustment: Your rent can be adjusted no more than once a year.

  • Written notification: You receive a letter explaining the adjustment, including the previous index, the new index and your updated rent.

  • Effective date: The new rent applies from the beginning of the second month after you receive the letter.

💡 Example: If you receive your letter on 15 October, your adjusted rent applies from 1 December.

Your prepaid rent amount may also be adjusted to reflect the new rent amount.
