How to Register Your Address - Hamburg

📍 Hamburg, DE

Written by Xena

Why Do You Need to Register Your Address?

One of the first things you need to do after moving to Hamburg is register your address. You will often hear the phrase: "You need to get your Anmeldung done!" Anmeldung simply means registration in German.

According to German law, you are required to register your address within 14 days of moving into your new accommodation if you plan to stay in Hamburg for more than three months.

In Hamburg, address registration is handled by the Hamburg Service vor Ort – Einwohnerangelegenheiten (Residents' Affairs).

👉 Why is it important?

Once registered, you will receive a registration certificate (Meldebestätigung or Meldebescheinigung) and your German tax identification number (Steueridentifikationsnummer or Steuer-ID), which will be sent to your registered address by post.

This certificate is essential for many administrative processes, such as:

  • 🌐 Applying for a residence permit

  • 💳 Opening a bank account

  • 🌐 Setting up a phone or internet contract

  • 🏡 Registering for health insurance

  • 💼 Starting employment and completing tax-related procedures

How Do You Register?

  1. Request Your Anmeldung Documents from LifeX 📢

Contact us via the LifeX app to request the necessary registration documents, including your Anmeldung form and Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (landlord confirmation).

  2. Book an Appointment at Hamburg Service vor Ort 💼

You must book an appointment at one of Hamburg's residents' registration offices.

There are two ways to arrange your appointment:

    • By Phone: Call 115 (or +49 40 115 from abroad) to arrange an appointment.

Important: Unlike some other German cities, Hamburg requires an appointment for in-person registration. Walk-ins are not generally accepted.

You can choose any Hamburg Service vor Ort location, regardless of which district you live in.

  3. Attend Your Appointment 📝

Bring all the required documents with you. The registration process usually takes around 15–20 minutes.

The current registration fee is €16 per person, or €16 for a family registering at the same address.

  4. Receive Your Registration Certificate 📄

Once your registration is completed, you will receive your Meldebestätigung.

Your German tax identification number (Steuer-ID) will be sent to your registered address by post automatically after registration.
