Why Do You Need to Register Your Address?

One of the first things you need to do after moving to Berlin is to register your address. You will often hear the phrase: “You need to get your Anmeldung done!” Anmeldung simply means registration in German.

According to German law, you are required to register your address within 14 days of moving. However, in Berlin, securing an appointment may take longer, so don’t worry too much if you cannot register within the official timeframe—this rule is not strictly enforced.


👉 Why is it important? Once registered, you will receive a registration certificate (‘Anmeldebestätigung’ or ‘Meldebescheinigung’) and a tax ID (‘Steueridentifikationsnummer’). This certificate is essential for many administrative processes, such as:

  • 🌐 Applying for a visa

  • 💳 Opening a bank account

  • 🌐 Setting up a phone or internet contract

  • 🏡 Signing up for health insurance


How Do You Register?

  1. Request Your Anmeldung Form from LifeX 📢 Contact us via the LifeX app to request your registration form.

  2. Book an Appointment at the Bürgeramt 💼 Visit your local Bürgeramt (citizen’s office) to complete the registration. There are several ways to get an appointment:

    • Online Booking: Secure an appointment through the official Berlin service portal: Berlin.de - Anmeldung einer Wohnung.

    • By Phone: Dial 115 to request an appointment. (Not recommended if you don’t speak German fluently.)

    • Walk-in: You can visit a Bürgeramt without an appointment and wait in line. However, this might take several hours depending on how busy they are.

  3. Receive Your Registration Certificate Once your appointment is complete, you will receive the Anmeldebestätigung, which you should keep safe for future use.


What Documents Do You Need?

👤 Valid Passport or ID (for EU citizens)

📝 Anmeldung Form (completed and signed) - Available upon request in the LifeX app.

📄 Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (Landlord Confirmation)

  • This document confirms your residence and must be signed by your landlord or the main tenant (‘Hauptmieter’).

  • 📢 LifeX provides this document to all members upon request via the LifeX app.


How to Get the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung?

👉 Reach out to the LifeX team via the chat in the app and request the document. It is usually sent within a few business days.

📢 Important: You cannot register without this document, so ensure you request it before your appointment!
