One of the first things that you need to do after moving to Munich or just by moving from one Munich address to another is to register your new address. You will often hear the sentence: ‘You need to get your Anmeldung done!’
Anmeldung, in one simple word, means registration.
The law in Germany states that you should register your address within 14 days of moving to the country. 🇩🇪
Why is it important to register your address?
Once you register your address, you will receive a registration certificate known as your ‘Anmeldebestätigung’ or ‘Meldebescheinigung’ and a tax ID (‘Steueridentifikationsnummer’). The registration certificate is crucial as it serves as proof of address and is needed to:
Apply for a Visa 🛂
Open a bank account 💳
Set up a phone contract 📱

How do you register?
You will need to visit a council ‘Bürgerbüro’ in Munich or one in your area. You can find a list of the different Bürgerbüros and additional information here.
There are several ways to do this:
Online appointment:
You can easily book an appointment online via the official website. Choose ‘Meldeangelegenheiten’, then select 1 for ‘An- oder Ummeldung - Einzelperson’, and finally select a time at one of the Bürgerbüros.Call for an appointment:
Dial 115 or 233-96000 and ask for an appointment. This option is not the most convenient if you're not fluent in German. 📞Walk-in:
You can also go without an appointment, wait in line, and register in person. However, this can take a while depending on how busy it is. ⏳

Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (Landlord Confirmation):
This document can only be signed by your landlord or the person giving you the apartment. This can also be signed by the main tenant of the property (‘Hauptmieter’). If you're unsure, contact your landlord or the company you're renting from.
How to get the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung/Anmeldung?
